Information for prospective Honours students
Becoming an Honours student
- Step 1 - Select a project
- Step 2 - Seek project approval
- Step 3 - Apply for a scholarship
- Step 4 - Enrol at the University of Sydney
- Step 5 - Start your research program
Step 1 - Select a project
Prospective Honours students are encouraged to browse information about cancer researchers and cancer research groups at the University of Sydney, its teaching hospitals and affiliated research institutes available on the Cancer Research Network website.
Once you have identified an area of interest or a potential supervisor, contact the group leader or potential supervisor and arrange to speak with them about a possible project.
Step 2 - Seek project approval
All students must apply to be admitted to an Honours year. This includes students who are already enrolled in a four-year course with a compulsory Honours year, e.g. Bachelor of Psychology. Gaining entry into Honours is competitive - the standard that students need to achieve must meet certain minimum requirements but will also depend on the number and quality of other applicants in that year. As deferment of Honours is not possible, applicants need to apply in the semester prior to commencement.
- Download and read the Honours Application Information and Honours Application Form.
- Contact the relevant School or Discipline within the Faculty of Science or Nursing using the Faculty of Science Honours Coordinator Contact Information. For Faculty of Nursing enquiries, please contact the Faculty of Nursing Honours Coordinator, Dr Jo Patching, by or on 9351 0648.
- Organise your potential (co-)supervisor(s). If you are enrolling in the Faculty of Science, at least one supervisor must be within a School or Discipline of the Faculty of Science.
- Arrange for the School or Discipline Honours Coordinator to sign your Honours application form or attach an acknowledgement from the School or Discipline that you have notified them of your intention to study there.
- If you are applying for Honours in more than one area then list your areas in order of preference on the application form. You will need to repeat steps 2, 3 & 4 for each area you are applying to.
Submit the completed application form to the Faculty of Science Office by the due date.
Please note:
- Most Schools and Disciplines also have their own separate application forms, which must be completed and submitted directly to that School or Discipline. This is not a substitute for applying to the Faculty of Science Office and applicants to these Schools must also submit an application to the Faculty Office as described on the Faculty of Science website.
- The deadline for all local Honours applications for Semester 1 entry (for 2009) is 27 November 2008. The deadline for all international Honours applications has now passed (31 October 2008). Late applications from international students may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Step 3 - Apply for a scholarship
The University of Sydney will be offering 100 Honours Scholarships in 2009. Honours Scholarships are valued at $6,000 and are awarded on the basis of academic merit and personal attributes such as leadership and creativity. Application close at 4.30pm on Friday 19 December 2008.
To receive one of these scholarships, applicants must be local students (ie. Australian or New Zealand citizens, or permanent residents of Australia) and be commencing a University of Sydney Honours programme in the following year.
Please note, the program you are studying must have an additional year following the normal three-year Bachelor degree. Please check with the relevant Faculty if you are unsure whether your course of study is considered to have an additional Honours year.
For full details, please visit the Honours Scholarships website.
Step 4 - Enrol at the University of Sydney
If your application is successful then you will need to Enrol in your new degree - your acceptance letter will have some information about this and you can read more about Enrolment, Re-Enrolment and Pre-Enrolment on the Faculty of Science website.
Step 5 - Start your research program
Places for students will be confirmed once the undergraduate exam results are released. The Faculty of Science will contact you soon after to notify you of the start date when you will begin your research program.
